The library will continue to offer curbside service only until the tentative date of Jan 23 due to Covid-19 staffing and public health considerations. We will also remain closed Sundays and Mondays until that time.

Engineering Science Quest: Space Force (Grades 1-3)

Blast off into Space with ESQ (Engineering Science Quest) and explore what is beyond our world. Participants will engage in various STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) topics such as circuity, coding, physics, and astronomy through hands-on activities. They will uncover the secrets of the universe and step into the boots of a NASA engineer to design and build their own space systems, create cool circuits, and more!

Each of these exciting events is run as an interactive YouTube stream. Some weeks, you can pick up a take-home activity kit from the library and everything in it is yours to keep!

Astronaut Attire - Mon. Feb. 7th
Design and Build - Kit
Learn about the components of a spacesuit and how they protect astronauts. In this session, participants will build a miniature spacesuit for a chipboard astronaut that contains the proper components of a real spacesuit, along with any other fun design elements they come up with!

Solar System Spin - Mon. March 7th
Circuit - Kit
Learn about circuitry while using LEDs and conductive materials to make a solar system. This solar system will feature pom-pom planets rotating around an LED “sun”.

Shoot for the Stars! - Mon. Apr. 4th
Instructional - Kit
Create a shooting star that spins with elastics while learning about the kinetic and potential energy from winding it up that allows for the star to rotate!

Space Debris Cleaning Spree - Tues. May 3rd
Coding -- NO Kit
Learn how to use block-based coding and fill in missing pieces of code to create an online game in Scratch! This game will involve controlling a spaceship that has to pick up pieces of space trash while avoiding asteroids and other space rocks.

This program is presented in partnership with ESQ from the University of Waterloo and is undertaken with the financial support of the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).
